Administration Models to Consider

Administration Models to Consider

Before you administer the PMSI to any of your clients you should examine it thoroughly by you should completing it yourself. Nobody knows you like you do, and thereby you will build confidence in the accuracy of the assessment. If you do that you could discover that one or more of the constructs or items do not apply to you or your personal situation. If that happens, we recommend that you are careful when selecting the constructs you wish to utilize when registering on line.

The second general feature you will discover about the PMSI assessment is that several of the constructs are deliberately ambiguous as to what target should be evaluated. Consider, for example, the Relationship with Colleagues constructs. The Assessments do not specify whether you should evaluate a specific relationship with a specific colleague or whether you should evaluate your relationship with colleagues in general. You must decide which target is the most appropriate one to be evaluated.

Now that you understand these two general features of the PMSI, we wish to discuss two general strategies for administering the PMSI to your clients. We refer to them as structured and unstructured administrations and each are discussed separately.

Unstructured Administration of the PMSI

If you choose to use an unstructured administration of the PMSI with your clients, you need only present it to them and provide minimal instructions for completing the instrument.
Under these conditions you are lPMSIing it entirely up to your clients to decide what is the appropriate target for evaluation when they encounter ambiguously targeted
subconstructs/items.

Returning again to the Relationship with Colleagues subscale as an example,
some clients will evaluate a specific relationship with a specific colleague and others will choose to evaluate their relationship with colleagues in general. Either choice is appropriate, proper and useful depending on the circumstances.

The advantage of using an unstructured administration of the PMSI is that you will discover which targets are seen by your clients to be the most salient for evaluation on those subscales where the target is ambiguous. The disadvantage of using an unstructured administration is that you may not get the information that you would like to have and you lose an early opportunity to engage in planning with your clients.

Thus, you must weigh carefully the strengths and weaknesses of an unstructured administration of the PMSI before deciding to use it.
If you decide to use an unstructured administration of the PMSI, it is essential to eliminate the resulting ambiguity after your clients have completed the instrument.

In the case of the Relationship with Colleagues subscale, you must ask the client whether a specific colleague was the one that was evaluated or whether colleagues in general was the target of the evaluation. You should note the answer on the PMSI beside the name of the Relationship with Colleagues subscale.
