The meaning of this study unit is not the working out of a complete social perspective of man. Within the framework of this study, social theories will be used as far as it supplements and enlightens the Theological and Psychological human views that have already been stipulated. These ‘human views’ must form a complete concept which works in enlightening on the demand for Functional Intelligence. The Polarity of Social Functioning. Heavy emphasis is placed on the polarity of social functioning and with most of the concepts and theories one aspect is identified that relates to social functioning, with a contra-pole on the other side that relates to social malfunctioning. However, we are of the opinion that the complexity of social functioning is of such an extent that a linear approach to polarity, where only one concept is used to explain each pole, will not likely be comprehensive enough. Furthermore, if all the main polarity patterns are analyzed carefully, it is clear that more than one concept can be identified on each part of the spectrum to identify optimal social functioning and social malfunctioning. Social functioning is described mainly in terms of three specific aspects:
