Man as a Rational EntityMan as a Rational Entity
A significant role is assigned to man's reasoning powers. Man is created as a rational being. It is with man's reason that he must evaluate the situation. It is the brain that has to give the instruction to the body to be obedient. It is man's reason that enables him to act rationally. The cognitive part of human functioning especially has to do with the workings of the brain. This includes the manner in which things are observed (perceptual observation), the manner in which
we learn (learning theory), the ability to remember (memory) and the manner in which we think and reason (levels of cognition). The fact remains, however, that this portion of human functioning is based on and is integrated with the bodily dimension of functioning. Biochemical processes in the nervous system and the brain constitute the biological bases for the cognitive part of human functioning. Although the cognitive function can readily be distinguished from its biological base, the two elements can never be separated from each other. There is a distinct field of interaction between these two dimensions of functioning. |
