Intimacy in Contrast with Isolation (Synthesis: Love)Intimacy in contrast with Isolation (synthesis: Love)
During early adulthood, the development task is to obtain a feeling of intimacy and prevention of feelings of isolation. Intimacy implies a close relationship with other people. This mostly includes a marital relationship.
It furthermore implies that besides an own feeling of identity, a joint feeling of identity develops with a marriage partner. The negative pole of this stage is isolation, this being the tendency of a person to cut himself off from intimate contact and only concentrate on him/herself. The ideal synthesis between intimacy and isolation, is known as love and can be described as a sexual relationship with a member of the opposite sex with whom one shares trust, cycles of work, reproduction and relaxation. Such a relationship is necessary for development of both persons, as well as for the development of their children. |
