Consequent to the above, people react in a particular manner - be it by suppressing their emotions or by expressing it through behaviour. It is therefore important to realize that emotions often are the motivating force behind behavior.
Within the conceptual framework of emotions itself, the emotions in people's lives must be considered. It is primarily on the emotional level that we experience the quality and significance of our lives. An integral part of this emotional experience is taken up by the cognitive element. The latter is an evaluation of the person's life from the perspective of the views on humanity, life and the world which determine the functioning of that particular person. The quality and significance of our lives therefore depend on the specific frame of reference operating within each individual. The implications of the above for Functional Intelligence should be clear: Although the client must be given guidance in the restructuring of his or her frame of reference it must be done with due regard for the Emotional aspect of the person's life. A central constituent of counselling should be to make the client aware of his/her subjectivity. In doing this attention should be given to the human capacity for intra-psychical communication and analysis. The client would firstly have to be taught to place his/her inmost ideas, convictions, theories, et cetera, on the table. Change starts at the recognition and acknowledgment of the causes of our emotional reactions and of the factors that induce our behavior. The client should however also be taught to cope directly with his/her emotions. Attention should be given to the lowering of the intensity of those emotions. He/she should learn to consciously concentrate on the positive aspects of any matter. |
